Tooth-colored fillings are an option to traditional metal fillings and fall into two categories:
direct restoration is a composite resin applied in one visit.
- Indirect restorations (inlays or onlays) are made either of porcelain or composite resin materials and are fabricated by a dental laboratory. These restorations generally take two appointments.

Direct restorations are referred as composites or filled resins. Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when the tooth is prepared, and this may result in a smaller filling than that of an amalgam (silver filling). Composites are "bonded" or adhesively held in a cavity, which allows for a more conservative repair to the tooth.

The cost is moderate and depends on the size of the filling and the technique used to place it in the prepared tooth. It generally takes longer to place a composite filling than what is required for an amalgam filling. Composite fillings are subject to stain and discoloration over time.

They blend well with tooth enamel and don’t look like fillings, and they are a good alternative if the teeth to be restored are near the front of your mouth and don’t need a large restoration.
