It’s Not Vanity. It’s Dignity.
Cosmetic dental work for older adults isn’t about looking younger — it’s about quality of life, confidence, and feeling like yourself again.

Index
There’s a conversation that happens in families all the time, and it usually sounds something like this:
“Mom, what about your teeth?”
“Oh, I’m fine. At my age, who cares?”
And that’s where it ends. Because the person asking doesn’t want to push. And the person answering has convinced herself that wanting a better smile at 65 or 70 is somehow vain. That it’s a luxury for younger people. That she should be grateful for what she has and stop worrying about how she looks.
We’d like to challenge that.
Because in our experience — twenty years of treating patients across every age group — the desire for a comfortable, functional, good-looking smile doesn’t have an age limit. And the relief people feel when they finally get one is never about vanity. It’s about dignity. It’s about quality of life. It’s about feeling like yourself.
What we actually hear from patients over 60
When older patients come to Smile Designs, they almost never walk in saying “I want to look younger.” Here’s what they actually say:
“I can’t eat the foods I used to love.”
This is the most common one. Missing teeth, ill-fitting dentures, and weakened dental structures change what you can chew. People give up apples, steak, corn on the cob, crusty bread. They eat softer, blander food — not by choice, but by necessity. Over time, this affects nutrition, energy, and overall health.
“I’m embarrassed to smile.”
It comes out quietly, almost apologetically. A missing front tooth. Teeth that have become discolored or worn down. A denture that clicks when they talk. They’ve learned to cover their mouth when they laugh, to keep their lips pressed together in photos, to avoid situations where someone might notice.
“I’ve stopped going out as much.”
This is the one that breaks your heart. When someone is self-conscious about their teeth, they withdraw. They decline dinner invitations because they’re worried about eating in front of people. They skip family gatherings. They sit at the back of the room. The world gets smaller.
None of these are cosmetic complaints. They’re functional, social, and emotional realities. And every one of them is fixable.
The treatments that change lives at this age
The good news is that dental technology has evolved dramatically, and the solutionsavailable today are better, more comfortable, and more natural-looking than what was available even ten years ago.
Dental implants. If teeth are missing, implants are the gold standard for replacement. A titanium post is placed in the jawbone, and after it integrates with the bone, a natural- looking crown is attached. The result is a tooth that looks, feels, and functions like the real thing. You can eat normally. You can smile without thinking about it. Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch.
There’s a common misconception that older adults aren’t candidates for implants. While certain health conditions need to be considered, age alone is not a disqualifying factor. Dr. Rauchwerger regularly places implants for patients in their 60s, 70s, and beyond.
Implant-supported dentures. If someone already has dentures and they’re uncomfortable — slipping, clicking, causing sore spots — implant-supported dentures can transform the experience. Instead of a removable plate that sits on the gums, the denture is anchored to implants in the jawbone. It doesn’t move. It doesn’t require adhesive. It feels secure.
For many patients, this is the single change that has the most dramatic impact on their daily life. The simple act of being able to bite into an apple again can feel life-changing when you haven’t been able to do it for years.
Whitening and bonding. Not every case requires implants or major work. Sometimes the teeth are there, but they’ve become stained, chipped, or uneven over time. Professional whitening can brighten teeth significantly in a single visit. Bonding can fix chips and smooth out rough edges. These are simple, affordable treatments that make a noticeable difference.
Crowns. Older teeth that are cracked, worn, or weakened can be protected and restored with crowns. A well-made crown looks completely natural — nobody can tell it’s not your original tooth — and it strengthens the tooth for years of continued use.
For the families who are reading this
If you’re the daughter or son who’s been worrying about your parent’s teeth — if you’ve watched them change how they eat, avoid photos, or pull back from social life — you already know this matters.
Here are a few things that might help:
Reframe the conversation. “Mom, I want to take you to get your teeth done” might land wrong. But “Mom, I want you to be able to eat whatever you want at Thanksgiving” connects to something she actually cares about. Lead with function and quality of life, not appearance. Offer to come to the appointment. Many older patients are more comfortable when a family member comes along — especially for an initial consultation where they’ll be receiving a lot of new information. You can ask questions, take notes, and help process the options afterwards.
Understand the decision dynamics. In many families, the older parent may agree to treatment but needs a family member to help navigate the logistics — scheduling, transportation, insurance, financial planning. Being willing to own the logistics can be the thing that turns a “maybe someday” into an actual appointment.
Know that it’s covered more than you think. Dental insurance, Medicare Advantage plans with dental riders, and supplemental dental plans all play a role. Our office team can help you understand what’s covered and what payment options exist. Many patients are surprised at how much financial support is available.
Why we care about this
Smile Designs is led by Dr. Sergio Rauchwerger, a Harvard-trained prosthodontist whose entire specialty is focused on restoring smiles that have experienced significant damage or loss. Many of the most rewarding cases we see are patients in their 60s and 70s who come to us after being told by other practices that they have limited options.
That’s not true. There are almost always options. The question is finding the right specialist to evaluate them.
Dr. Rauchwerger approaches every patient the same way: with a comprehensive evaluation, a clear explanation of what’s possible, and an honest recommendation. Whether the answer is implants, a few crowns, or simply better-fitting dentures, the goal is always the same — restoring function, comfort, and confidence.
We believe that wanting to smile freely at 70 is not vanity. It’s dignity. And every person deserves it.
