Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry in Wellington

After preventative care, the types of dental care most people are accustomed to receiving are cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is composed of all those treatments that improve the appearance, but not necessarily the function, of your teeth. Restorative dentistry includes all those treatments that ensure you have a fully functional set of healthy teeth.

As we describe the specific treatments in each category, you will notice that there is plenty of overlap. A person seeking a cosmetic improvement to their smile may need crowns to cover and protect chipped or broken teeth. But a crown would also be considered a restoration as it returns full functionality to a person’s mouth.

When it comes to your treatment, we will ask you about your goals and concerns. Are you happy with the color of your teeth and their alignment? Is there anything about your teeth that makes it difficult to chew your food or talk normally? Do you have any concerns about your dental or oral health because of problems a family member has encountered? As we design a treatment plan just for you, we will include any recommendations we find advisable based on our examinations and diagnostics using your x-rays.

From that point, the choices are yours. We are here to give you a positive experience every time you come in and to help you achieve the goals that are important to you. We will also advise you on any changes we feel are needed to protect the long-term health of your teeth and mouth.

We take great pride in helping even anxious patients and those who have had bad experiences at other dental offices feel comfortable during their treatment. That is the professional way we would want to be treated when we receive care, so we give our patients nothing less.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening: This is a very popular cosmetic dentistry service among our patients. We offer both in-office teeth whitening Wellington and at-home whitening. Both offer very good results. The in-office system can lighten your teeth to visibly brighter shades in just an hour or so. The at-home system also provides very satisfactory results obtained over a longer period of time.

Dental Bonding

This is a fast, simple method of repairing minor flaws. Dental bonding can be matched to your normal tooth color and then be used to cover a tooth with severe staining, giving it a brighter appearance. It can lengthen a tooth that is shorter than those around it and fill in chips or gaps between teeth.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

A filling is normally done to repair damage to a tooth resulting from a cavity. But a tooth-colored filling is requested by some of our patients who don’t like the appearance of their dark, metal fillings. If you’ve ever had a photograph taken while you were laughing with friends, you may have noticed your dark fillings. With fillings matched to the color of your teeth, they can become undetectable. If you are interested in replacing metal fillings with this newer material, please get in touch with us so we can update your treatment plan.

Porcelain Veneers

These beautiful ceramic veneers provide a very fast improvement to your appearance and correct a multitude of cosmetic problems. This is the treatment many patients choose for eliminating gaps between the teeth or correcting irregularly shaped teeth. When some teeth are longer than others, veneers will quickly provide a more uniform appearance. They also cover severe staining that teeth whitening won’t correct. Some people choose veneers to give all their visible teeth a more pleasing shape. Veneers require very little preparation of the teeth which makes many of our patients prefer this method of improving their appearance over crowns.

Teeth Straightening

Realizing how many of his patients would like straighter teeth, Dr. Rauchwerger added Invisalign custom-made aligners to his practice. The first step in starting Invisalign treatment is a thorough examination and x-rays. A treatment plan is then developed and sent to Invisalign technicians who turn that treatment plan into a series of clear acrylic aligners. The patient receives a series of numbered aligners. Each one will be worn for about two weeks. This series of aligners gradually eases the teeth into their final positions. The great benefit to Invisalign treatment is that your friends may not even realize you are in the middle of teeth realignment because the aligners are practically invisible.

Dental Crowns

For some people, dental crowns are the best way to bring about cosmetic improvements because some visible teeth may be deeply fractured, severely chipped or otherwise damaged. A crown protects a tooth that has been weakened and that might break further. And, of course, a crown offers a beautiful, new appearance for any tooth. Dental crowns provide protection for weakened or damaged teeth or one that has received root canal therapy. With proper care, a crown can enable you to retain that tooth for the rest of your life.

Restorative Dentistry

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Most of our patients ask for tooth-colored fillings when there is decay that needs to be filled. These fillings will not darken with age like metal fillings will. And they provide a cleaner appearance. There is yet another major benefit to tooth-colored fillings: When placing a tooth-colored filling, less of the natural tooth will need to be drilled away during preparation. This is because this filling material bonds tightly to your natural tooth material; metal fillings do not. Therefore, the procedure will be faster and less uncomfortable. And we are always happy when we can preserve your natural tooth material.

Dental Onlays and Inlays

Onlays and inlays differ from tooth-colored fillings because they cover a larger area and they are manufactured outside the mouth. If you have a large surface area of a tooth that needs repair, the area of the tooth will be prepared and the lab will create a clean, white onlay or inlay to fit into that area. An inlay will cover a fairly large area of tooth and fit inside the points of the tooth (called “cusps”). An onlay will replace one or more of these cusps. In some cases, when replacing old, large metal fillings, an onlay or inlay is the best solution.

Dental Bridges

This is a time-tested and relatively fast method of replacing a missing tooth. First, the teeth on either side of one or two missing teeth are prepared as they would be for a crown. Then a bridge is created in a lab, consisting of the two crowns for the prepared teeth and clean, white porcelain replacement teeth in the middle. With care, your dental bridge can last for many years.

Dental Implants

Dental implants is the tooth replacement method now preferred by many of our patients. With this method, a slender titanium post is placed in the bone of the jaw in the location of the missing tooth. This post will substitute for the root of the tooth that is now missing. When it has fully healed and bonded with the bone of the jaw, a white crown matched to your other teeth will be attached to the top of the post. A dental implant can last the rest of your life and look, feel and act just like your natural teeth.

Complete And Partial Dentures

For some patients, the right solution for missing teeth is a denture. Dentures can be partial, just replacing a few teeth, or they can be complete dentures, replacing all teeth. Dentures can now also be anchored to carefully-placed implants to eliminate slippage and enable our patients more flexibility in food choices.

Night Guards

When teeth need restoration because of nighttime teeth grinding, the solution will usually include night guards to be worn during sleep to prevent further damage.
